Coach – What’s your take on U of L’s treatment of Brad Durham? IMO, it’s bad, bad! If Petrino’s word is not is bond then ….?? The fallout from this could be significant.

I may not totally agree with it, but I am on the outside. I do not know the real reason as to why the scholarship was pulled. We can speculate that the UofL staff thought that they could have landed a better player. Then you must ask yourself this question–If UK pulled Brandon Stockton’s scholarship a few years back to get a sweet 6′6 swingman from New York would you have been real upset? Of course, since it did not happen it makes it a little easier for you to say yes. You must also ask yourself if you would do the same in Petrino’s shoes? It is easy to say that we would be ‘men of our word,’ but a couple sub-par seasons in Division 1 football puts you squarely on the hot seat.

This is also something that works both ways. Many times, players will verbally commit to one school and then back out of their original commitment and go to another school.

I just hate to see it happen to Brad Durham. He will end up going somewhere else on scholarship and maybe have a chance to get back at UofL for pulling his scholarship.

As for the fallout. I don’t think there will be any. Most Kentuckians are ‘true blue’ anyway and this won’t affect UofL recruiting in KY because they have strong ties to the deep south to get many top players from those areas. Most Kentucky kids outside of the Louisville Metropolitan Area would be brainwashed into attending UK if given the choice anyway so I don’t see much fallout and I’m sure Petrino is intelligient enough to realize this. What you have seen and will continue to see is the state (or should I say UK’s blue-blooded) media develop more stories on this issue and overlook any on-field success the Cards have. That is what has traditionally hurt UofL’s in-state recruiting(although after the late 1980’s it has mattered less) more than this situation ever could.
